Sea otters are a fun animal to watch. They will eat a long time, but then they will want to play. This otter kept rolling over in the water and had its hands to its face looking like something had surprised it.

Sea otters are a very playful animal. This otter had just finished playing hard with another otter and was ready for a rest. It looked as if it went to give the other otter a high-five to say it was fun playing with him.

Sea otters spend the majority of their life in water. It really is rare to see them out of the water. When we came across this ice berg with a number of sea otters resting on it, it caught me by surprise. From a distance I assumed it was seals, but was very excited when I realized it was otters. It was fun seeing them out of the water and resting on the ice berg!

Sea otters are very easy going animals most of the time.  They lay on their back and rest, or eat clams and mussels they have brought up from the ocean floor.  This young otter was stretching out from a nap, and it looked like it was about to clap its paws.

When we spotted this mother and baby sea otter, we made sure we didn’t scare them. This was a very young otter, and spent most of its time we were with them on its mother. Mother sea otters will hold their baby on their stomach as they rest to make sure the baby is safe and to protect it.

I don't think I've ever seen an unhappy otter.  I've seen some playing and fighting each other, but it still looks like they have a smile on their face.  This guy was having a relaxing evening and just enjoying his clams and slowly eating them while swimming backwards.

In Yellowstone in the winter, the Yellowstone river freezes up. A large waterfall builds up a wall of ice at the bottom of the falls over the course of the winter. Getting to see this otter slide down the mountain beside the waterfall and then slide onto the icy falls was a sight I had wanted to see for a long time!

There are few things in nature more fun to watch than an otter family.  They cannot stay still and are always on the go.  The family was pruning each other when something caught their attention and they all looked at the same time.

If I was a river otter, winter would be my favorite season.  They get to run and slide on the snow and ice.  They will create a tunnel in the snow for them to slide down, like human kids do in the winter.  These three otters all slide down this slide, and as the last came down it rolled over on its back to slide into its sibling.

River otters follow the river, even when it freezes over.  They can swim large distances without needing to come up for air.  Here, a snow drift had covered the river and this otter decided to come up to look for any danger nearby.

I have only seen baby otters a couple times. This was the first time I saw them, and as it swam by its mother I could tell it was a baby because it was only half as big as her. When it came close to where I was and climbed on the log in the water to check me out, it was neat to get a close up look of just how small it was.

When river otters aren’t fishing, they are a very playful animal. I had watched this otter for a long time as it fished and caught some small fish. Once it was full, it begun to play and would go up a small hill and slide down it. Often it would slide on its back and then roll around and scratch his back on the ice before doing it again.

River otters are master fishermen.  This evening it seemed like every time an otter went down, it came back with a fish.  This mother decided to swim to shore to eat, and one of her pups followed her hoping to get some of the food.

River otters are truly an animal that likes to have fun.  When I see them, they always seem to be smiling and enjoying themselves.  This otter would swim under the ice to a small opening a couple hundred yards down stream, and then run and slide on his belly back to his family.  A video of this otter sliding went viral.
