Oh My

Oh My

Sea otters are a fun animal to watch. They will eat a long time, but then they will want to play. This otter kept rolling over in the water and had its hands to its face looking like something had surprised it.

High-Five

High-Five

Sea otters are a very playful animal. This otter had just finished playing hard with another otter and was ready for a rest. It looked as if it went to give the other otter a high-five to say it was fun playing with him.

Otter Berg

Otter Berg

Sea otters spend the majority of their life in water. It really is rare to see them out of the water. When we came across this ice berg with a number of sea otters resting on it, it caught me by surprise. From a distance I assumed it was seals, but was very excited when I realized it was otters. It was fun seeing them out of the water and resting on the ice berg!

Otter Applause

Otter Applause

Sea otters are very easy going animals most of the time.  They lay on their back and rest, or eat clams and mussels they have brought up from the ocean floor.  This young otter was stretching out from a nap, and it looked like it was about to clap its paws.

Ice Rest

Seeing sea otters out of the water is rare. But it was fun seeing what they look like completely out of the water on this ice berg. An ice berg made for a great place to rest for these sea otters.

A Mom's Embrace

A Mom's Embrace

When we spotted this mother and baby sea otter, we made sure we didn’t scare them. This was a very young otter, and spent most of its time we were with them on its mother. Mother sea otters will hold their baby on their stomach as they rest to make sure the baby is safe and to protect it.

Happy Swimming

Happy Swimming

I don't think I've ever seen an unhappy otter.  I've seen some playing and fighting each other, but it still looks like they have a smile on their face.  This guy was having a relaxing evening and just enjoying his clams and slowly eating them while swimming backwards.

Back Rest

Back Rest

Sea otters spend a lot of their time on their back in the water. When they come up to eat they lay on their back, and when they are on the water surface they seem to just always be chilling on their back. This was a young otter and was curious about the boat.

Sea Otter Family

Sea Otter Family

Baby sea otters are very small when born. A mother sea otter is very protective of their baby and don't let them get out of sight. These otters were riding the waves and enjoying a relaxing morning in the first light of the day.

Running Together

Running Together

I think river otters have the most fun of any animal. They always seem to be goofing off and seem to be not caring about anything else. Watching these three otters run, slide, and run some more made me smile.

Snow Beard

Snow Beard

River otters are a very playful animal.  After swimming in the freezing water for a long time, this otter finally got out to play and clean himself.  He would roll around in the snow and have the best of time, and when he would look up his face would often be covered in snow.

Ice Playing

Ice Playing

River otters are such a fun animal to watch in the wild.  They are unpredictable, and more often than not they look like they are having the best time.  This family play wrestled for a very long time, and never seemed to tire of playing.  One of these otters is the famous otter from my otter video sliding on its belly that went viral.

Waterfall Slide

Waterfall Slide

In Yellowstone in the winter, the Yellowstone river freezes up. A large waterfall builds up a wall of ice at the bottom of the falls over the course of the winter. Getting to see this otter slide down the mountain beside the waterfall and then slide onto the icy falls was a sight I had wanted to see for a long time!

Otter Family

There are few things in nature more fun to watch than an otter family.  They cannot stay still and are always on the go.  The family was pruning each other when something caught their attention and they all looked at the same time.

Winter Fun

Winter Fun

If I was a river otter, winter would be my favorite season.  They get to run and slide on the snow and ice.  They will create a tunnel in the snow for them to slide down, like human kids do in the winter.  These three otters all slide down this slide, and as the last came down it rolled over on its back to slide into its sibling.

Otter Head

Otter Head

River otters follow the river, even when it freezes over.  They can swim large distances without needing to come up for air.  Here, a snow drift had covered the river and this otter decided to come up to look for any danger nearby.

Otter Kiss

Otter Kiss

River otters are a very playful animal and have a strong family bond. If they separate for a while to hunt and then come back together, they normally have a big reunion. These otters were greeting each other after getting out of the water.

Young Rest

Young Rest

I have only seen baby otters a couple times. This was the first time I saw them, and as it swam by its mother I could tell it was a baby because it was only half as big as her. When it came close to where I was and climbed on the log in the water to check me out, it was neat to get a close up look of just how small it was.

Running Otters

Running Otters

River otters love to have fun! I watched these otters for a long time as they moved down stream, and I waited patiently for them to get close enough to photograph. Once they got to me they didn’t slow down and just kept running and sliding by.

Ice Play

Ice Play

When river otters aren’t fishing, they are a very playful animal. I had watched this otter for a long time as it fished and caught some small fish. Once it was full, it begun to play and would go up a small hill and slide down it. Often it would slide on its back and then roll around and scratch his back on the ice before doing it again.

Swimming Close

River otters are master fishermen.  This evening it seemed like every time an otter went down, it came back with a fish.  This mother decided to swim to shore to eat, and one of her pups followed her hoping to get some of the food.

River otters are truly an animal that likes to have fun.  When I see them, they always seem to be smiling and enjoying themselves.  This otter would swim under the ice to a small opening a couple hundred yards down stream, and then run and slide on his belly back to his family.  A video of this otter sliding went viral.

River otters are not afraid of cold water. They will gladly jump in and out of the water onto ice and roll around on the ice and snow. In a snowstorm, this otter was trying to find a good place to get out on the ice.
